The key to this idea is to have a domain name of your area code. It does not matter what extension for the most part as long as its your area code. For example, if your area code is 619 then anything like 619.org or even 619.us will do. Once you have the domain, look for all the business in that area code with an online presence and list the top ones on your site while contacting the smaller ones for link exchanges. Get your url out and around the area as much as possible whether it be simply word of mouth, advertising in the phone book, or the aforementioned link exchanges. As your traffic builds, add a classified section for just people living in your area code. The basic premise here is to be a valued resource in your area. Once you achieve that, you will be able to charge for advertising and entrance into your local business directory.
